When you are out looking at Oahu real estate, you may hear the term “Ohia.” It is usually used in the sense of “Ohia” floors or “Ohia” posts.  Ohia Lehua or just “Ohia” is a specific type of very dense Hawaiian hardwood.  It is grown mainly on the Big Island of Hawaii out of barren lava fields and volcanic soil there.  The tree has flowers of white, yellow, orange or red.  It the most abundant tree on the Big Island.  This wood is very, very hard, but also known to be unstable if not properly seasoned.

Ohia is used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, and the native Hawaiians used it even for tools.  The color of Ohia Lehua ranges from light brown to redish in color.  It is very expensive and beautiful as flooring, but is not that commonly used in Oahu real estate.  For flooring, it is seen on Oahu mostly in luxury real estate.  Other than in flooring, Ohia posts are used decoratively and for structural posts on porches or other applications in many Oahu homes.  Ohia posts and flooring impart a distinctly Hawaiian and tropical character to any Oahu home.
