The Diamond Head Estate of Doris Duke | Honolulu Real Estate

A few days ago, I visited the Diamond Head home of Doris Duke (1912-1993) who was, at one time, one of the wealthiest women in the world. Doris Duke first visited Hawaii (along with various Muslim countries) on her honeymoon in 1935 and like many others, fell in love with our wonderful islands and decided to stay, at least seasonally.

Doris Duke’s home on Oahu, Shangri La, is a 5 acres of  beachfront Honolulu real estate located in the Diamond Head neighborhood on Oahu.  Now a Museum of Islamic Art & Architecture, Shangi La was co-designed by Marion Sims Wyeth, and built in 1937. Shangri La is open to the public and houses Doris Duke’s vast collection of collection of Islamic Art.

Objects in her collection include massive carved doorways, intricate mosiaic tiles and panels, colorful textiles, ancient pottery, painted ceilings and numerous other objects of art and architecture.  Tickets to Shangri La and its private tours can be obtianed through the Honolulu Museum of Art .

It is a beautiful and amazing place to see, not only a lovely example of luxury Oahu Honolulu Real Estate in the exclusive Diamond Head area on Oahu, but also art and historic items like one might never have the opportunity to see again.
